Swedish Bagpipe Tunes at Halsway Manor

The third weekend of säckpipa playing at Halsway Manor is now in the diary.
Get in touch to register your interest.

An enjoyable full-on fun-packed workshop weekend with Vicki Swan to introduce players to both the säckpipa (Swedish Bagpipes) and Swedish bagpipe music.

Who's it For?

  • Säckpipa players (E/A chanter preferably with major and minor 3rd and 6th)
  • Complete beginners (with own instruments)
  • There may be some opportunity to play together as an ensemble with all combinations, but different workshops will address different musical things.

In previous years we have all played on E/A säckpipas - so if you're in the process of buying pipes this is the key we use. You will also find that these things are useful:
E/A chanter with:

  • second thumb hole to give the minor third (counting up from the 6-finger note)
  • the possibility to have major and minor sixth, usually with an elastic band to swap between the two (again the sixth counting up from the six finger note, makers will know what I mean!)

Vicki Swan
Vicki is a second generation piper and holds the Zorn Brons award for the traditional playing of the säckpipa. Vicki holds a degree in music specialising in performance, is a qualified music teacher specialising in instrumental music tuition,  has a post graduate qualification from the Royal College of Music in London (for performance). Although now possibly better known for teaching and playing the nyckelharpa, Vicki's Masters Thesis was an investigation into the teaching and learning of the Scottish Smallpipes Online Using Podcasting as a Distribution Medium.

Jonny Dyer
Jonny was taught Highland Pipes by Roddy Swan, but in deference to the neighbours now only plays his Sean Jones border pipes in G and Alban Faust säckpipa. Jonny will be teaching the beginner classes alongside Vicki.

We hope to invite Terry Mann again to help fettle reeds:
